On Lying and Liars

Image
Origin Liar: "one who knowingly utters falsehoods” Origin Lie: "speak falsely, tell an untruth for the purpose of misleading,"  Emphatic “lie through (one's) teeth is from 1940s.” Origin v2: "rest horizontally, be in a recumbent position"  In a country now led by pathological liars, who have accumulated power and wealth through lying and who encourage lying as a way of life, I think it important to consider what lying does to the liar’s mind, body, soul. As so many of us have, we can become seduced by the seeming effectiveness of all this lying.  Look at all that wealth and power, that unaccountability for your crimes, all that attention and even glory. It can seem as if the liars have it all while the rest of us have been duped by a religiosity or spirituality that honors truthfulness and honesty. While technology could be making it harder to be honest and true, lying for power is ancient, biblical, something humans have always been up against. Lying eme...

Body Mind Virtue

"The sheer physical necessity is urgent because the body and the entire nervous system cry out for the healing waters of silence." Howard Thurman,   Def Virtue:  The capacity to act with goodness Origin Virtue:  Uprightness of life The contemplative African American theologian Howard Thurman speaks about self-reflection as a holy practice in ways similar to what is found in yoga philosophy. Hope Through (Re)membering

Image
Def Hope: to desire with expectation of obtainment or fulfillment When we find a way to embrace the abandoned parts of ourselves, the (re)membering of the parts that were violated, ignored, marginalized, we find in that reconciliation sources of hope.  Our deepest and most profound desires for belonging are released from the isolating shadows, the suffocating lack of light, into the sweet cradle of the heart. This journey from the underworld back into life ignites in us the courage to hope, again. That the (re)membering is preceded by a (dis)membering makes the brokenness holy which is not say that violence is holy.  Rather, brokenness is the configuration for growth, the broken vessel through which the light flows. (Re)membering brings us into greater wholeness, the sovereignty for hope.  If divine intervention, spiritual friendship and care, the love from our ancestors and beloveds can help us to build a bridge from the cave of the forgotten to the ocean’s edge, we star...
